#alaac2023 in Chicago, part 3: the quilts from With Strings Attached

The ALA Biblioquilters began when Connie and I met on a street corner at the 1998 ALA Conference in Washington, D.C. We'd met virtually on the PubLib discussion group but we hadn't met in person.  The very first ALABQ meetup was at the 1999 annual conference in New Orleans.  In 2000 we began making group quilts for the Exhibits Round Table Silent Auction. Correction:  we made one group quilt.  I coordinated it -- "a block representing your state" in red/yellow/blue/cream.  That quilt sold for $240.

Since then we've made dozens of quilts and raised ...

Midweek: it's a flimsy! from With Strings Attached

I could have kept piecing rounds upon rounds but I thought I'd better stop!  It's 37 x 33.    The center panel was a tote bag from Foreword Reviews

Next:  figure out how to quilt it.

This will be donated to the silent auction at the ALA Annual Conference in June.  (Click on the ALA Biblioquilters label in the side bar to see previous conference auctions.)

Together again! #alaac22 friends, books, food, books . . . and quilts from With Strings Attached

After two years of virtual meetings the ALA Annual Conference returned in-person.  The 13,900 registrants included 8.023 librarians (and trustees, friends, family) and 5,133 vendors (books, equipment, technology, supplies, and more).   (By contrast, 2019 in DC: 21,460 and 2019 in New Orleans: 17,599.)

My trip to Washington was the first time I'd flown since February, 2020.   Though O'Hare was bustling (9:30 a.m. flight) the lines moved quickly.   I snapped photos of the Lake Michigan and Lake Erie shorelines.

Friday afternoon: reception for ALA benefactors and leaders at the Library of Congress ...

In memoriam: Roberta Horton from With Strings Attached

The Quilt Show posted the news that renowned quiltmakerRoberta Horton passed away on February 4.  Their tribute is here with a link to a TQS episode featuring Roberta and her twin sister Mary Marshuta. [It's a 57-minute show, so allow yourself some time.]

My first encounter with Roberta's work was in the mid 1990's.  I belonged to the Better Homes and Gardens Craft Club.  One month they offered a kit with woven plaids designed by Roberta.  There are 20 fat 8ths. The pattern is a simple square-in-square. The fabric is so nicely-woven and soft. I couldn't ...

Weekly update: not much to report, but there is a finish from With Strings Attached

Two weeks in:  Stevens and I are healthy. We've checked in with family and friends and they are fine.  Nearly every activity has come to a screeching halt.  The big cancellation in my world was the ALA Annual Conference at the end of June.  Both the Zion Woman's Club luncheon (May) and the AAUW luncheon (June) have been cancelled. The Rotary Golf Outing is rescheduled for September 25.  I've been to three meetings using Zoom with more to come.

I've kept my outings to two supermarkets (Aldi and Jewel) and the post office.  I've taken ...

Weekly update: Covid-19 upsets nearly everything -- but we quilt on! from With Strings Attached

The Corona Virus, or Covid-19, is officially a global pandemic.  Universities are closed (many for the remainder of the term), schools are closed (two or three weeks as of now), libraries and museums are closed.

I had five events to juggle on Saturday (two with my husband).  Kiwanis pancake breakfast was postponed, AAUW was cancelled, LCCCA concert was cancelled. The Zion Woman's Club / Zion Conservatory of Music fundraising luncheon was cancelled. The caterer had already bought the food and she was able to package all the meals "to go." They tried to notify everyone who'd bought a ticket ...

Weekly update: Luncheon winnings and a concert, RSC teal, Frolic dispatched, and the next project from With Strings Attached

The Lake County Women's Coalition Women's History Month Celebration was Saturday. The theme was "Valiant Women of the Vote in Lake County."  The Zion Woman's Club honoree was my friend and former coworker Rosemary who spearheaded the voter registration program at the library. The AAUW honoree was Sally who has coordinated AAUW's voter registration program and moderated many candidate forums.

There is a silent auction and raffle to raise funds for LCWC scholarships for women over 30 studying at the College of Lake County. They awarded three this year.

I contributed Crystal Chain (which I made ...

December OMG achieved from With Strings Attached

My One Monthly Goal for December dealt with the ALA Biblioquilters.  (ALABQers are people who work in or with libraries. We collaborate to make quilts for the scholarship auction at the ALA Annual Conference.)

Part one -- make four book blocks.  Once I got into it I ended up with a dozen! (I created the block design for Block Lotto.  Another Biblioquilter is coordinating the quilt that will use these.)

Part two -- create and post instructions for two quilts that I will coordinate.
     (a) Wanda Hanson (Exuberant Color) showed this shadow box  a while ago.  Her blocks were 16". I rescaled ...

Weekly updates: tote bags, counter tops and frolics (holiday and quilting) from With Strings Attached

The tote bags I made for the school children in Nepal have been delivered.  Margaret, my friend who supports the school and asked if I could help out, sent this photo of the kids.  It was taken by the school's U.S. coordiantor. (The sign says, "Thank you dear Nann Hilyard.")

[For those who are interested in the school and the parent organization: Impact Schools ]

The counter tops were installed Friday.   I had no idea there were so many choices for faucets until I had to choose one.  (The first one I sort of liked was $1400.  The second ...
